Phantom Peak - Part 1
29/10/2025Four people meet in a cable car travelling up Phantom Peak Mountain.
Mick & Callie - A young male Ranger and his baby sister Callie, looking for somewhere to lay low;
Delta - An odd Druid wearing a large puffer jacket with tentacles for hair;
Bellamy - An elf Guardian who hails from a distant war-torn kingdom;
and Pidge - An orc Warrior who claims to be there for military service.
Entering the reception, they met the receptionist Poppy Posie who introduced them to the Phantom, a cryptid who stalks the mountaintop. Poppy introduced the group to her uncle, Elias, who she mentioned was the only survivor of the mining accident twenty years ago. Immediately distrusting Elias, the group asked Poppy to show them to their cabin.
At the cabin, Poppy gives them a quick tour and lets them know that the generator is out back, and that if it goes off to just give it a kick. She leaves, letting them know that she’ll be in the reception if they need her. The group looks around the cabin, finding a half burnt letter from Elias to someone named Martha, and a photograph of six miners: Elias, Poppy, Martha, Kevin, James, and Felix.
The group decides to return to reception to speak to Poppy about the letter and photograph. During this time, the generator goes off, and Pidge decides to go kick it while the others head to reception. She arrives to find it sabotaged, and the wires cut. Whilst alone at the generator, Pidge sees her long-lost daughter, clad in fine jewellery and posh clothing, but refuses to believe it’s really her for a second.
The rest of the group heads to the reception, only to find it darkened and empty. There is no one inside, so they decide to investigate the staff room, where they find crates and barrels marked with Phantom Peak Mining Co, and a locked trunk with three more photographs (one depicting a gruesome murder) and a sample of a green gem which they later learn is jadeite. Mick also finds a key labelled ‘Supply Shed’.
The group meet back up with Pidge, who does not tell them about her encounter, and head to the supply shed. In the supply shed, the group find a hunting dog who they named Benedict. They also find two hunting rifles and a jacket embroidered with an F.
Benedict barks and pulls Bellamy outside, where she sees her old friend. Bellamy badly wants to believe it’s her, but thinks better of it and leaves after a tearful goodbye. Delta expresses annoyance, believing that the others are having her on. She storms out of the supply shed, only to come face to face with a fisherman who starts attacking her with a harpoon. She runs back to the supply shed and tells the others that she believes them now.
The group figures that they must be seeing the Phantom that Poppy told them about, which takes on the form of someone its target feels guilty about. They decide to let Mick have his encounter so they can determine which illusion will be the easiest to kill. Mick walks outside with Bellamy in tow, and after some time sees his own illusion - his old foster mother, Jill. Jill attempts to lure Mick into the forest, but fails, and Mick and Bellamy head back to the supply shed, deciding that Pidge’s illusion will be the easiest to deal with.
They find a fuel canister and some spare wires, and bring them back to the cabin to fix the generator. The group decides to question the people staying in the two adjacent cabins to see if they know anything about the Phantom. Delta and Bellamy head to Willow Cabin, while Mick and Pidge head to Oak Cabin.
At Willow Cabin, Delta and Bellamy pretend to be surveyors and meet Steve and Barbara, an older couple on holiday for their anniversary. After some investigating, they learn that Steve and Barbara come here every year so they can see their daughter, Poppy, who they lost in the mining accident, and whose form the Phantom takes. Steve also revealed that it wasn’t Elias who survived the mining accident, but Martha.
At Oak Cabin, Mick and Pidge meet a group of young drunk men at a bachelor party. They meet Max Winterfern, who offers them a drink and information. Pidge finds a letter between Max and his fiancee Laura, apologising for something he did. Max screams from outside and footprints lead towards Lover’s Lookout. Mick and Pidge follow, hoping to save Max before something happens to him. They follow him to Lover’s Lookout but are too late, and find his mauled form.
It turns out that Max survived, barely, and Mick and Pidge hurry with him to the infirmary, collecting Delta and Bellamy on the way. They rush to the infirmary, where they meet Dr. Martha, who is experimenting with a tissue sample and a piece of jadeite. She has the group set Max down on the table so she can treat him.
Unfortunately, the group questions Martha so relentlessly that she is unable to deliver medical treatment, and Max passes away from his injuries. They learn that Martha was indeed the survivor of the mining accident, and gained a nasty wound from dynamite on her way out. She expresses guilt that she left the other miners to die during the cave-in. However, they are able to learn from her about the Phantom’s weaknesses - loud noises and bright lights - and gain Martha’s aid. Now knowing that Martha was the only survivor, the group surmises that the Poppy and Elias they met earlier in the reception must both be Phantoms - meaning there is more than one.
The group decides to head to the abandoned chapel, figuring that there would be a large bell there which they could use to weaken the Phantom. While there, they find a Phantom, taking the form of a vicar with a slashed wound across his neck. He monologues about all the guilty finding their peace here, and Pidge attacks.
The group is able to succeed in combat against the Phantom, thanks to being able to make the Phantom vulnerable with Callie’s cries. On defeat, the Phantom fades into dust, and the group makes their way back to their cabin for a well earned rest.
